Natural Beauty Makes a Difference Backstage

As Emma described in her post below, it’s thrilling to see internationally-renowned fashion designers embrace naturally-conscious beauty (Rodarte & Aveda!). That’s a trend even more designers should follow! The difference that an eco-conscious brand like Aveda makes at a fashion show is never more evident than backstage, where all the creative insanity takes place. There’s a lot of noise and a lot of squeezing, past cameras and journalists and publicists and stylists (and or course models). Hectic, yes.  But the Aveda team does a great job of making it all feel mindful with little details like vats of iced herbal tea and reusable metal water bottles (instead of the zillions of plastic bottles usually given out). Not to mention the low-VOC quality of Aveda’s hairspray (VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are essentially breathable toxins that contribute to smog). Imagine how much hairspray it takes to secure an updo and then multiply that by thousands of heads of hair during fashion week and you can see why every little bit helps! Btw, my favorite style-to-wear-now from the Aveda shows this season is probably the flat chignon at Jason Wu. It can be done in 5 minutes and would work just as well as a braided bun. To copy the Jason Wu look, prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener, secure hair at the nape and weave a long, 10″ hairband down and around the ponytail, twisting as you go. Then pin up the pony into a makeshift bun. Long-haired girls, you can do this while you’re sitting at your desk reading this blog! Writer :: Jolene Hart
