Bites Be Gone :: Natural Insect Repellents

As soon as the ground gets soaked by a few thundershowers and the summer nights get muggy, those pesky mosquitoes will return. Nothing puts a damper on an evening outside more than bug bites (not to mention the horror of waking up to spotted legs the next morning). No, thank you! Still, I’m the first one to resist when conventional bug spray is being passed around, since most of those formulas still rely on the carcinogenic chemical DEET for effectiveness. Searching around for natural bug repellents that can be made at home, I found a few recipes that I’d like to try this season (witch hazel mixed with a few drops of either tea tree, peppermint or lavender oil) and others that I plan to avoid (one part garlic juice mixed with five parts water). But the DIY angle can really be skipped altogether, given the great selection of herbal bug deterrents out there. Sunfeather Natural Soap Company makes Bug Off!, a mixture of rosemary, citronella, geranium and lemongrass oils that’s actually moisturizing for your skin! The formula also comes in wipe, soap, candle and balm versions. And Kiss My Face’s Swy Flotter contains oils of citronella, bay leaf, lavender, patchouli, tea tree and lemon (among others) but goes on with nearly imperceptible scent. Both sprays are free of parabens and are beautifully grease-free. Go ahead, spritz away and stay out all night! Writer :: Jolene Hart
