Memorial Day Is For Red Poppies and Remembrance

Submitted by Beauty Brains Blog

Today is Memorial Day in the US. We hope everyone’s having a good long weekend but we also hope you remember that the original intent of this holiday is honor those who have died in wars. You have our condolences if you lost anyone in your families in this tragic way.

What does this have to do with beauty science? Well, another name for Memorial Day is Decoration Day (because we use flowers to decorate graves of our loved ones, especially war veterans). And what industry is more about decorating than the beauty biz? Ok, I admit that’s a thin connection, so here’s a more scientific tie-in.

Another Memorial Day tradition is selling red poppy flowers as a way to raise money for war orphans. And red Poppy is a popular color name for cosmetic products, like Clarins Red Poppy Lipstick. There’s even a patented process for using crushed red poppy flowers (Latin name Papaver rhoeas for those of you keeping score at home) as a way to impart color to the skin.

So there you have it, a reminder about the true meaning of Memorial Day and a little bit of Beauty Brains beauty science.
